You know the saying 'ask and you shall receive'? Well, i've been asking the universe for a new Mexican offering in Malta for a while now... and it looks like my prayers have just been answered. Let's face it, it's been a long time coming. And yes I know Avotaco exists, which I am a fan of, but the island needs more and this is a different concept!
The Mexican, located at The Plaza Shopping Mall's food court in Sliema, will be ready to say hola amigos to anticipating diners in approximately two weeks time (i've been sitting on this information since July and so happy to finally be allowed to reveal it).
The eatery promises to provide authentic, freshly-prepared, homemade Mexican (and Tex-Mex) dishes of top quality. Most of the ingredients have been imported directly from Mexico. Here's what to expect from the menu (with all dishes being under €8).
First of all, I am going to start with the taco offering which will be The Mexican's house speciality. You can choose from four including chicken, carnitas (roasted pork), al pastor (grilled beef), and shrimp. Mex street food style tacos? Check. Corn tortillas? Check.
Each taco filling will be served with its own toppings and hot sauce. If you want a bit of everything, order The Three Amigos where you'll get a chicken, chorizo and al pastor taco.
Appetisers will come in the form of Queso Fundido (a melted cheese mix with guac, sour cream, pico de gallo and a tortilla), hard tacos (with grilled chicken, beef or shrimp) and fully loaded nachos with various toppings.
You can expect three kinds of hearty Mexican soups (including a chicken tortilla soup), burritos filled to the brim, taco bowls and chimichangas (deep fried burritos filled with either chicken, ground or shredded beef).
The menu will also include three quesadilla options, fajitas and flautas. The flautas will consist of four fried corn taquitos (two beef, two chicken) with queso fresco and more. Oh and let's not forget churros for dessert.
The owner Juan (from South America), is the brains behind Machu Picchu too, the Peruvian kiosk also at The Plaza. I spoke with him about tacos and Mexican food, he sure knows his stuff.
I don't want to pressure you The Mexican but... the Island needed this for a while, so please be amazing.
