Discovering the lesser-known or less talked about places (that deserve to be recognised), is a big part of the reason why I started this website. Mother India is one of those places.
You might not see it on people's typical recommendations of 'Indian restaurants in Malta' , but although it has its hits and misses, it is one Indian eatery that shouldn't be skipped.
Situated in Mellieha, Mother India serves an array of typical Indian dishes, with some on the modern side. At the time of ordering, they were not yet open for dine-in, so I decided to do a take-out sesh instead.
I gave the starters a miss and decided to start with the 'From the Tandoor' section. The memorable and exceptionally aromatic tandoori fish was a highlight. The use of spices was evident, and you can tell it was marinated well as the flavours seeped through the flesh.
The tandoori king prawns were perfectly charcoaled on the outside leaving that seductive smoky flavour that lingers on. The tightly curled plump prawns were fresh and juicy on the inside.
Although the flavours were there, I felt that the tandoori chicken legs could have stayed in the grill a bit longer as they were a bit wet. It just didn't taste of tandoori chicken, just meat with Indian influences. Hopefully that was a one off.
Out of all the curries, the kahari, was the highlight. Expect a tomato-based rich thick gravy with a subtle spiciness that will leave you wanting more.
Our lamb rogan josh was another hit. Mother India's homage to this classic curry was well-balanced and had a vibrant mix of those Indian spices we all know and love.
Mother India, It may not be the mother of all Indian restaurants on the island, but it's certainly one you should not overlook. I didn't, and have no regrets.
