REVIEW: EMMANUEL REAL AFRICA FOOD, HAMRUN

I finally got round to trying Emmanuel Real African Food in Hamrun and for the most part, I wasn't disappointed.

They heavily focus on West African cuisine and being of that descent, was happy and surprised to see this in Malta. They had me at fufu, jollof rice and groundnut soup.

Fufu is a traditional African side dish made from mixing yams and other starchy veg. You usually dip it in stews with your hands. Emmanuel's was definitely authentic.

Peanut butter is the basis for the groundnut soup. I would've loved to have seen it in the thicker (and more popular) stew form instead, but that's just my preference. Although the soup was flavourful and I loved the tender lamb chunks, the taste of peanut butter wasn't that present (which in my opinion, kind of misses the point).

The chicken jollof rice was hit and miss. The actual jollof rice itself was a true taste of West Africa. The chicken it came with however, included one whole piece (as opposed to the usual marinated chunks) that was pretty much dry and tasteless. This is one of the most popular African dishes and they just topped it with unseasoned chicken.

You must devour their fried plantain. You can tell they use really ripe ones to ensure that they're perfectly sweet.

I'll definitely eat there again and so should you... but now I know what to have, what to skip and what I need to try (the waakye and the grilled fish were was sold out).
