SAN REMO REVIEW: A NO FUSS FAMILY-RUN EATERY IN MOSTA WHICH IS FULL OF LOCALS

San Remo is a no fuss eatery filled with locals of all ages happy to pop in for a meal, or for the generous aperitivo they serve with complimentary bites.

Located in Mosta, with chef Chris Borg leading the kitchen, San Remo offers humble traditional Maltese food and much more. They're not trying to be gourmet and it works.

The portions of most dishes are exceptionally generous (I mean, one plate is a meal for two that'll make you roll home) and the atmosphere will make you want to stay for hours.

Starters include prawns wrapped in potato 'noodles', deep fried and crunchy.

You'll also find earthy bebbux (snails) stew simmered in a rich garlic and herb sauce.

Octopus pan-fried with garlic, herbs and white wine is a worthy contender to whet that appetite.

The linguine marinara involves a buckload of pasta, topped with a mountain of shellfish. Stingy definitely isn't a word you can associate with this moreish plate, fully-loaded is though.

San Remo, Mosta - Restaurant review

Our meat of choice was from the specials board, consisting of a well-balanced lamb tagliata, with pretty prominent 'gamey' flavours. A bit overdone on this occasion, but could be because of my preference. Flavours weren't lacking.

Chris Borg is a passionate chef who seems to have a good thing going. San Remo was a full house, the portions are definitely typical Maltese portions, the punters looked happily fed, and it is just a lovely environment to be around. It does what it says on the tin and doesn't pretend to be anything else.

You may need a doggy bag... even with a big appetite.
