The Blue Elephant group has been around since 1980 with Thai eateries (and food products) all over the world. I remember frequenting the one in London numerous times as a child, and visiting Malta's version, gave me warm nostalgic feelings.
Blue Elephant, located within The Hilton hotel in St Julian's, has the same interior concept as the rest. Upon entering, you'll be forgiven for thinking that you've walked into an untouched jungle in Thailand.
Think exotic plants, waterfalls, and ponds with real koi fishes swimming around as the backdrop to your meal. It definitely is a feast for all the senses.
If you're on the hunt for really traditional Thai food, then you probably should look elsewhere. That isn't a bad thing, I am just saying that Blue Elephant's Thai cuisine is more of the Royal Thai kind, rarely accessible to most.
Starters were the highlights including a trio of fragrant scallops, accentuated by a delicate dosage of black pepper sauce and coriander.
Chicken wings done right are hard to forget. In this case, they had a very generous meat-to-bone ratio (always important) and were succulent, moreish, saucy, slightly sweet and piquant.
It is almost impossible to find soft shell crab on a menu in Malta. These were lightly battered, not greasy, and a crunchy opportunity that shouldn't be passed up.
A delectable and well-balanced main came in the form of a steamed fillet of sea bass with a crisp, sharp and zingy melange of lemongrass, fresh lime juice, crushed chilli, garlic and coriander. The combination of fragrant condiments surely packed a punch.
Blue Elephant is perfect for a date night (whether a first or an anniversary), a chilled dinner with the family, a birthday celebration or just a catch up with friends.
The service is second to none, and if I may be bold as to suggest that you go all out on starters to share (as opposed to a three course meal). They really are the pièce de résistance.
