A new pizzeria just opened in the heart of St Julian's and believe me when I say that it will leave you with a pleasant taste in your pie hole.
Salumeria Gardens is the project of Max Close and Pablo Gone, the lively sibling duo behind Salumeria in Valletta (the place known for awesome cheese and cold cuts).
Here you'll find a menu which showcases both traditional and creative Neapolitan style pizzas. What they all have in common is the obvious use of premium quality ingredients and charred blisters on the rim of the crust.
The simple yet powerful margherita nails it with the right proportions of San Marzano D.O.P tomato sauce, mozzarella di bufala and fresh basil.
Spice lovers should most certainly lean towards Salumeria's exemplary Nduja Spianata, which is generously topped (without being too fully-loaded) with a pleasantly piquant nduja and salami spianata calebrese. Your tongue will get a slight tingly sensation whilst simultaneously tasting all the deep flavours.
Now, I am a purist when it comes to pizza, so although I normally wouldn't order something too 'out there', for some reason, I gravitated towards the Harissa. A Middle Eastern inspired creation consisting of seasoned minced lamb, finished with a touch of Greek yoghurt and mint.
Vegans will be happy to know that they have a plant-based pizza which includes an olive and sun-dried tomato tapenade, broad beans, fresh braised fennel, cherry tomatoes, extra virgin olive oil and mint.
The pizza at Salumeria Gardens are chewy, crunchy on the underside, and honour pleasant flavours.
I liked it, no loved it, and hope you will too! They're open for deliveries (using Wolt), take aways and to dine-in.
