THE FACES BEHIND THE FOODIE LENSES: MALTA'S TOP PROFESSIONAL FOOD PHOTOGRAPHERS

Let's be very honest, the majority of us epicureans spend lots of time looking at food pics. Whether it's on Instagram, to check out what the dishes are like at a certain establishment, for cooking inspiration or just for pure enjoyment.

These days, everyone thinks that they're a food photographer because they can take above average shots of their food with the add of a quick filter. There's nothing wrong with that, hell, I'm guilty of it (minus the filters, I hate filters) but there's so much more to that and it takes a lot of skill, time and effort to do it professionally.

Basically, I want to give some love and a special shout out to some amazing professional food photographers that are behind the food porn on menus, the social media of restaurants  and magazines. They deserve it.

IN NO PARTICULAR ORDER:

1

Matthew Cauchi aka The Culinary Photographer

Matthew means business when it comes to taking the most stunning food and restaurant photographs for some of the best restaurants in Malta.

His past and present restaurant clients include EAT (the amazing street food truck), Lovage Bistro, The Lord Nelson, The DB group (who own Nine Lives, AMAMI and more), Marina Club VW, Bottegin Palazzo Xara and Kitchen Concepts.

He studied Hotel & Restaurant Operations at ITS and started food photography 8 years ago as a hobby when he was working as a chef at Cafe Cuba.

2

Brian Grech

There's not been a single food shot of Brian's that hasn't made me want to lick my screen, his restaurant interior shots are really impressive too. Grech is an exceptionally passionate food photographer with an enviable portfolio (with 21 years experience).

His past and present culinary clients are some of the finest eateries on the island and include the restaurants at The Corinthia Palace Hotel & Spa, Noni (a must go if you haven't been yet), Zest, Kingsway, Grain Restaurant (at the 5* luxury Rosselli hotel in Valletta) and Susurrus by Marvin Gauci.

He is also hired by various foodie print magazines including Taste&Flair.

3

Sean Mallia

Sean Mallia began to explore photography whilst he was studying architecture at the University of Malta. He started working as a waiter at Marvin Gauci's Tarragon restaurant when it first opened.

Today he specialises in taking hot shots of food and architecture (naturally). His impressive portfolio includes Caviar & Bull, 59 Republic, Iniala (the super luxury hotel Mark Weingard will be opening in Valletta) and Waterbiscuit restaurant at the Intercontinental... to name a few.

Did I mention that he is charge of the majority of those succulent photographs you see on the cover of Served, the beautiful print food-based magazine?

Keep doing your thing, Sean!

4

Robert Camilleri

Have you ever wondered who the person is behind Manouche's amazing food erotica? Well it's Robert Camilleri and he's been shaking the food photography scene since 2000. He focuses a lot on food products and shots for menus (he also owns Fotoclassic in St Julian's).

His portfolio is strong with past and present clients including Palazzo Preca, Portomaso Cafe, Nom Nom, Zen Sushi, Medasia, The Hugo's Group (Hugo's Lounge and Hugo's Burger to be precise), Burger King, Pizza Hut and much more.

5

Tonio Lombardi

Bahia, Amami, Miro, Panorama, TukTuk and The Harbour Club are just some Tonio Lombardi's esteemed culinary clients.

Tonio first started casually dabbing in fashion photography. When he started to get the odd jobs here and there, he felt the need to explore other areas. His photos really make you eyes pop and he's definitely a master of his skill.
