Cupcakes and champagne is the concept of this cute new boutique cafe in Valletta
If you look at my bio below you’ll see that I love a lot of things beginning with the letter C, coincidence? Probably. I love champagne and I love cupcakes, so when I heard of a new cafe that pairs them together… I just had to C it for myself (sorry).
Located in the heart of Valletta, Mettelina focuses on expertly-crafted cupcakes, sweet, or savoury, free of sugar, and with minimal butter.
Champagne is sold by the glass which is an added bonus since most trendy cafes sell a glass of prosecco or champagne by the bottle. The space (designed by RIA Studios) may be tiny but it’s welcoming, pretty and cozy. Guests can sit in and enjoy their cupcakes served on specially-made bespoke ceramic plates.
Flavours of the sweet kind include matcha & white chocolate, salted caramel, strawberry milkshake, banoffee, tahini & caramel, Danish liquorice caramel, pistachio, red velvet, and more.
Savoury flavours include/ have included parmesan, basil & pine nuts, bresaola & cheese, goats cheese and honey & rosemary, to name a few. You’ll also find high-quality baked goods, premium coffee, teas, alcoholic sparkling tea and special Danish liquorice chocolates.
Mettelina Cupcakes, which opened in October 2024, is the brainchild of Mette Saliba Lorenzen (from Denmark) who started baking up some crowd-pleasing cupcakes for delivery and in local Artisan Markets as a hobby since 2010. How did it start? She once tried a horrible cupcake in Malta and wanted to do better. Her recipes are hers and took five years to perfect with training and courses. The shop was bought during Corona in 2020 and she recently quit her full-time job to live her entrepreneurial dream.
The freshly-made cupcake selection changes very regularly so if you’re a repeat customer there’ll always be something new to try for eating in or taking away.
