15 PLACES FOR TOP HOT DOGS IN MALTA

I hate it when people ask me 'Are you a burger person or a hot dog person?'. Ok, truth be told, I do indulge in the former a bit more than its American/ German cousin, doesn't mean to say I don't like them both equally.

Here is a list of places in Malta that I hope you'll enjoy to satisfy that hot dog craving. From the fully-loaded and the meat-free, to the OTT and the back-to-basics. A plethora of sausages are involved.

Here goes... in NO PARTICULAR ORDER:

1

EAT, Mosta

This street food truck offers the whooping Raclette Bacon Dog. Expect a foot long sausage, caramelised onions, smoked bacon, fried onions, smoked chipotle mayo and melted cheese.

Website

2

Dog House, Bugibba

Here, you'll find hot dogs with foot long German sausages including bratwurst (with herbs), krakauer, chilliwurst, kindswurst (beef sausage) and pizzawurst (with cheese chili and salami).

All for €5.

Website

3

Bandit, Hamrun

Bandit in Hamrun are known for their quality, creative, not-just-for-show, avant garde burgers.

But they also have a more than decent hot dog offering. These include the Clean Dog (with krainer sausage, onion jam, mustard and ketchup) and the Fries & Onion (with krainer sausage, caramelised onion, fries, cheese, bacon bits, ketchup and mustard).

4

Falafel Street, Sliema

This completely vegan dawg will tantalise even the biggest carnivores.

They use the world-renowned Beyond Sausage and top it with onions, gherkins, ketchup and mustard.

5

Penzalapanza, Gzira

This late-night gourmet street food truck knows how to grill up some real meat! The Sicilian way.

There are five different hot dog sausages to pick from including the Mini (pure pork, skinless), the Weiner, the Frankfurter (pork and beef), the Bratwurst, the Nero Nebrodi (with black pork) and more.

6

Grills on Wheels, various locations

Grill on Wheels is a new street food truck which uses local meat.

Their sausages are made from a combo of lamb, pork and beef. They prepare traditional Serbian bbq sausages (also known as Kobasica) seasoned with garlic and homemade ground paprika.

7

Pit Master, Birkirkara

The smoked meat gurus at Pit Master will let you choose between four kinds of hot dogs.

The beef hot dog, the smoked pork wurst (with an authentic pork and beef Polish sausage), the Hybrid (a mix of beef, lamb and pork, smoked with a blend of wood and topped with red onion and fresh coriander) and the Knockwurst.

8

Choco Kebab, Bugibba

Choco Kebab, the beloved vegan eatery, has a cult following for a reason. They offer creative plant-based junk food!

Their completely meatless hot dog involves the Beyond Sausage, peppers and caramelised onions.

9

Becky's Kitchen, Naxxar

Head over to Becky's Kitchen to fix your hot dog cravings. You'll certainly be spoilt for choice.

The offering includes corn dogs, a British Dog with baked beans (not for me, but hey), The American Dog, Bacon n Cheese dog, the Morning Dog (with bacon strips and fried egg), the Chicken Dog (with a breaded crispy chicken sausage, onions in beer, Leciester cheese, sriracha mayo and spring onions) and the Mexican Dog.

10

The Hot Sausage Company

The Hot Sausage Company has gained popularity for their high-quality sausages which are manufactured in the UK, not only by them, but exclusively for them.

You can select either a small or a large and with or without cheese.

Simple and delicious.

11

Hungry Cow, Bugibba

Hungry Cow have seven hot dogs on their menu, mostly fully-loaded and certainly not... traditional.

There's a curry dog, a Chicago dog, a classic hot dog (although I don't know what's classic about baked beans), a New Orleans dog (with sautéed red peppers, Swiss cheese, mushrooms and olives) .

To be honest, I'd only go for the Jalapeño hot dog (with melted cheddar, topped with homemade chilli sauce).

Website

12

Bavarian Sausage, Sliema

Danke schön (that's thank you in German) to this street food stall for giving us traditional Bavarian sausages.

Meaty, juicy, flavoursome.

Website

13

Shakes n Bakes, San Gwann

Shakes n Bakes have expanded their menu to include not only pizza and crepes, but now, hot dogs too.

You'll find three, but it's the Mexican (with Mexican salsa, cheese, jalapeños and crushed Nachos) that you should lean to.

Website

14

Queen's Chips, St Julian's

Queen's Chips have been satisfying punters with their Dutch fries for a while now since they came to the island, but did you know that they also serve simple no-fuss hot dogs... especially for those who believe in less is more.

Website

15

The Journey, Hamrun

Known for their international and exotic burgers, The Journey offers a pretty decent hot dog offering including A Wudy hot dog and Fred's Hot Dog (with frankfurters, salami, mortadella, cheddar, caramelised onions and The Journey's Sauce).
