What happens when one of the best fishmongers on the island decides to open his own restaurant? The Seafood Market Grill... that's what happens.
I've been waiting over six months for The Seafood Market Grill in Gzira to open, the brainchild of Adam Demanuele (who runs Adam's Fish Shop and supplies to top local eateries), and yes it's indeed true that good things come to those who wait. In this case, excellent things.
Everything has been meticulously thought out. From the jaw-dropping yet minimalistic interior design (giving out serious London/Borough Market vibes) and the aprons worn by the well-groomed staff, to the branded wine glasses (well, the whole branding in general) and the tableware. They even give you bibs to wear to add to the experience. This place is the real deal and emits passion from every corner.
The very affordable menu is the Holy Grail of seafood menus (most dishes are between 10-13EUR). It is split into several categories. There's a bonus market style concept so you have the flexibility to create your own dishes. How? Choose your produce and quantity from the fish counter.
Most eateries only bother offering one type of oyster, Adam has swam that extra mile by serving rock oysters, Gillardeau, Imperial Dutch and Fin de Claire. I opted for the platter which has four of each (and as fresh as they come).
I loved tasting the differences between each, I've not had rock oysters (Belon) in so long, I forgot how much I adore them.
Their tartare game is strong showcasing a plethora of striking towers donning finely chopped raw fish. The salmon tartare was emphasised by citrus zest, coriander, wakame, and a delicate lemon olive oil emulsion. The combination of flavours electrified my palate.
The second tartare of choice was the special of the day which really commanded our attention. A sublime swordfish topped with semi sun-dried tomato and lemon zest is seductively surrounded by extra virgin olive oil, and a basil chiffonade.
I've never had an octopus carpaccio that was so generous in portion. Not only that, but the slices were cut thick. A solid 10/10 from me.
A hefty portion of seared tuna made its strong presence felt and was perfectly executed. The meaty fish was lightly seared and elevated further with black and white sesame seeds. It had a real umami flavour.
Battered prawns done the right way. The use of high-quality fat prawns is evident with each bite. They came piping hot and were enveloped by a crisp golden batter which really hit the spot.
Never underestimate battered prawns, they are pretty easy to get wrong, but Adam nails it.
Our gluttony got the better of us and we were defeated by the dishes we consumed. There are so many other things I want to try. Whether it's the scallops in butter, guanciale, rosemary and wine, or the abundance of fresh cooked fish, either grilled or fried.
I am so lucky to have this gem practically round the corner from my house (although it could also be dangerous).
I have absolutely nothing to fault. This is an exemplary restaurant which impressed me exceptionally. The ultimate result of when hard work, extreme passion and skill pays off.
A temple of gastronomy which was love at first taste. I'm already booking my table for next week.
