A Banquet From the Time of the Knights Inside a 1,000-Year-Old Bormla Museum
A feast within the walls of a thousand-year-old Maltese townhouse already has a certain amount of theatre to it. Throw the Baroque era and a menu pulled from the history books into the mix, and Thursday night suddenly has rather more ambition.
On 23 October, KulStoria is taking over Bir Mula Heritage Museum in Bormla for a several-course banquet transporting guests back to the world of Baroque Malta. Each carefully considered dish opens another chapter on the Knights and Grand Masters, from the lavish habits of the wealthy to the considerably less glamorous realities of everyone else. History, conveniently, comes with supper.
Historical chef Moyra Sammut will recreate dishes drawn from historical sources, with no fixed menu and seasonality helping determine what reaches the table. Rather than simply being served a history lesson on a plate, you’ll be invited to taste, question and compare flavours whose stories stretch back centuries.
What somebody ate could reveal considerably more than what they fancied for dinner. Food signalled wealth and status, but also religious observance and just how connected Malta already was to a much wider world. The Catholic calendar dictated when meat and other animal products could be eaten, and breaking those rules could even attract the attention of the Inquisition. Suddenly forgetting it was a fasting day feels rather more consequential.
The evening ends with Maltese coffee and one final story.
History class would have been considerably more popular if it had always involved dinner.
