A few months back, I revealed the news of a traditional British chippy opening in Malta and tons of people have been (no so) patiently waiting (including myself). Well the time has come... The Chip Shop officially opens today in Birkirkara and it's a love letter to authentic fish & chips.
To the best of my knowledge, this is the first and only British Chippy on the island (as in an actual shop) and we have Brett Gaston, a Northern lad from Manchester (with 13 years of catering experience) to thank for it.
Expect proper (and when I say proper, I mean proper) traditional fish & chips with homemade batter, fresh cod and chips. Talking of chips, Brett met with five different farmers and three big importers, trying 13 different kinds of potatoes to get the closest taste and textures of a traditional Maris Piper and King Edward.
If you've ever been to a chippy in the UK, you'd know that it doesn't end with fish & chips... and Brett is showing Malta just that.
Apart from authentic cod & chips, other items on the menu include proper Brit pies (€2.50), pudding, chip barm (€2.50), spam fritters, sausage chips & gravy, battered sausage, mushy peas, crispy cajun chicken, chippy style hand-pressed cheeseburgers (€3) and more. Note that everything is 100% homemade and so affordable.
Get in my face!
