A popular restaurant in Milan has set foundations in Malta for its second location. Yum is located in Valletta (where The Pulled Meat Company used to be) and the concept is to bring together a fusion of Filipino cuisine with an Italian flair.
The small space (split into two floors) is inviting, light and airy. You’ll find plants adorning the walls and fixtures creating a zen atmosphere.
Yum by name yum by nature? The affordable menu (items are €12 or under) is split into six sections. Starters include Shrimp cocktail (exceptionally large prawns wrapped in crispy fried noodles), ground pork rolls (filled with parsley, carrots and onions), siomai ('open' steamed dumplings consisting of shrimp, ground pork, mushroom, leeks and reduced soy sauce), and more.
Yum offers several kinds of rice bowls. They consist of vinaigrette rice with various toppings. For example, Visayas is topped with cooked shrimps, veg, nuts and coconut milk, Batangas is topped with beef tapa, mixed fruits and nuts, Mindanao is topped with raw salmon, fruits, nuts and barbecue sauce and ilocos with with pork belly and an anchovy sauce.
You’ll also find an assortment of noodle dishes such as Palabok (rice noodles sautéed with shrimps, squid, ground pork, fish sauce, atsuete), Canton (fried noodles with mixed seafood and veg) and Lomi (noodles in egg soup).
Slow-cooked baby back ribs in adobo sauce, rolled chicken, ginataang salmon and a barbecue chicken leg are some items you’ll find on the meats and fish section.
Veg lovers can munch on Lumpiang Sariwa (sautéed vegetables wrapped in rice paper and served with a rich yet light peanut sauce), Kulawong Talong (grilled eggplant in coconut milk topped with mixed salad, fruits and nuts) or a fennel and orange salad, to name a few.
Yum also has a burger and pasta section to appeal to the western palates or the ‘less adventurous’ diners. The Philippine burger includes adobo ribs, caramelised onions, bell pepper and cheese, the Italian burger consists of brasato, parmesan and caponata. Pasta involves ragu bolognese, carbonara, and more.
Filipino chef patron Marvin Braceros lived and worked in Milan for many years and studied Italian Cuisine at the Italian Culinary Institute… but the Philippines is where his roots are and heart is.
