From pastry chefs in luxury hotels to restaurateurs and sommeliers, it is a safe to say that most Maltese people working in the kitchen or in the food industry here (including some of my favourite chefs) have graduated from ITS (Institute of Tourism Studies). Malta's leading institution for culinary and hospitality qualifications.
Did you know that ITS boasts two restaurants that are run entirely by its students? Well, they do... and both are back in action as from 7th October (the first semester). Here is what to expect from The Voyage and Runway including multiple-course dinners at only 17EUR.
This year, The Voyage restaurant will offer a more refined and formal setting with a delectable €17 tasting menu of around five courses. Dinner is usually Wednesdays to Fridays at 7.30pm. Dinners on Wednesdays however, will be the same three-course set menu as their lunch offering (Mondays to Fridays from 12pm).
Runway restaurant will be less formal and you can also expect around five courses at €17. Dinners on Fridays will be prepared by the Bachelor Degree Culinary Arts students. Lunch at Runway is priced at €10.
Both are teaching restaurants, so you will regularly see a lecturer telling the students the correct way of doing things if a mistake has been made (like table setting for example). The menu changes often and you're basically eating a student's project.
I have been to both multiple times and there is nothing not to love. Jaw-dropping prices, supporting students and great food.
