From Yiamas to Magna Grecia: Refined Greek-Italian Fusion Comes to Zebbug

Apparently Greece and Italy have decided to stop arguing over who does food better and merge their cuisines instead. The result? Magna Grecia, a new adults-only dining concept in Zebbug.

The Greek-Italian restaurant comes from Katja Levato, of Yiamas and Mykonos by Yiamas, bringing together her love of Greek food and her Calabrian roots. There’s a bit of history behind the name, too: Magna Graecia was the name given to the coastal areas of southern Italy settled by ancient Greeks.

Centuries later, the connection is back on the dinner table. Just ten tables, two tasting menus and an à la carte option for anyone who prefers to make their own decisions.

The six-course Nostos (€70) starts with the chef’s amuse-bouche before moving through bresaola tortelli, cavatelli alla Norma Greca, citrus and herb granita and catch of the day, finishing with portokalopita, a Greek orange filo pie, with pears.

The eight-course Odyssey (€95) goes further, with octopus carpaccio with potatoes, cold-smoked beef tartare with salt-cured egg yolk, and handmade squid-ink tagliatelle with red mullet. For mains, choose between sous-vide lamb chops with saffron mash, or beef fillet with garlic-sautéed potatoes, spinach and house-made BBQ jus. Tiramisu meets baklava before a ricotta and pistachio cannolo closes proceedings.

Not ready for quite that level of commitment? The à la carte menu includes Mazara prawn pearl barley with rocket pesto, beef ragù arancini with feta saganaki, rolled moussaka with nduja-flavoured breadcrumbs and feta foam, and a catch of the day al cartoccio. Desserts include portokalopita with anise and honey sous-vide pears.

Greece and Italy have been sharing history for centuries. Apparently, dinner was inevitable.

Magna Grecia opens Friday 18 September, with bookings now open.
