At the risk of starting on a negative note, if I can be honest, I am not a fan of any restaurant i've frequented On Valletta's Waterfront. I usually find them to be tourist traps with poor-quality food. Thankfully, that's not the case at Ta' Detta.
Ta' Detta mainly raises the flag for traditional Maltese cuisine, with a few dishes from the Mediterranean thrown in for good measure.
The aljotta soup boasted an ambudance of chunky fish and fresh shellfish swimming in a tangy tomato-rich broth. It was pretty lip-smacking, if I may say so myself.
The three-tiered Maltese Platter is a love letter to the island's traditional delicacies, made to share between two. Not suitable for picky eaters, or the less adventurous.
Here you'll find succulent bebbux (local snails), deeply-marinated fenek, and a stew with horse meat. All these can be ordered separately too.
The bottom tier of the platter features a delicately fried skin-on fillet of flavourful swordfish which is both meaty and flakey.
The striking jet black fetuccini pasta (due to squid ink) was elevated further with king prawns, mixed seafood, garlic and sun-blushed tomatoes. It had a slightly nutty flavour with distinct and bold tastes of the sea.
All in all, Ta' Detta makes for a pleasant enough eating destination for tourists and locals alike.
The open kitchen brings a theatrical element to your experience, the portions are big, food is flavourful and the prices are more than decent!
